Love wants to play on his Ryder Cup team
ATLANTA, Georgia - Davis Love knows he will be on the 2012 US Ryder Cup squad after being selected as the US captain last January, but he wants to play his way into the 12-man lineup as well.
The 47-year-old veteran of six Ryder Cup and six Presidents Cup squads also says Americans need to relax against Europe in the Ryder Cup the way they do against the Internationals in the Presidents Cup to be more successful.
But Love hopes to help make that happen from the inside. One year ahead of the qualifying cutoff for eight automatic berths, Love stands in the final playing spot based on points.
"I made 12 (Ryder and Presidents Cup) teams in a row and I've been frustrated ever since," Love said. "I want to make another Ryder Cup team. I'm hitting the ball well enough to play on the team. I just need to make a couple more putts.
"It would rank pretty high. I'm not going to make it when I'm 55 probably, so I need to go ahead and get it done."
Love, whose only major title came at the 1997 PGA Championship, knows the tension of the Ryder Cup quest and the more casual feeling US players have regarding the Presidents Cup and its non-European lineup.
"We putt better at the Presidents Cup than we do at the Ryder Cup," Love said. "We are the European team when we play the Presidents Cup. We are a little bit more relaxed and play more of our game.
"At the Ryder Cup, the American team, they try too hard.
"They want to win too bad. Presidents Cup we relax and play like the Europeans. They do it like one or two points better than us. It's not like a huge difference, and we need to figure out how to have a little bit more fun and relaxation on the course."

A hard time for Ferrer

Roddick turns tide in Shanghai but Fish flounders
SHANGHAI - Fifth seed Mardy Fish became the first big casualty at the Shanghai Masters when he lost to 49th-ranked Bernard Tomic on Tuesday but fellow American Andy Roddick did make the third round.

Nadal echoed Shanghai Masters defending champion Andy Murray in complaining that commercial pressure from tournament sponsors had resulted in three ball changes over the last three events in Asia.
"You play in Bangkok with one ball, in Tokyo with another ball, here with another ball. That's too much in my opinion. (It) is dangerous and can cause injuries," said the 25-year-old Spaniard after his second-round win in Shanghai.
"Something must change because is too dangerous for the shoulders. You cannot change the ball every week."
Nadal said he would prefer to receive less prize money in return for less pressure from sponsors to use different balls. "I am very happy to win less money and have my health," he said.
"If we compare the Tokyo ball with this one (in Shanghai), it was much bigger, slower. The ball is completely different. This ball is very fast, it goes small and doesn't stay on the racquet. It flies a lot and is tough," said Nadal after beating compatriot Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3 6-2 to reach the third round.
"It is not necessary to have a standard ball for the whole season," said the Spaniard.
"For example, when you start the clay-court season, you have the same ball for that period; when you have the American hard court season, you have the same ball. So that's positive.
"But what cannot happen is to have one ball in Rome, one ball in Madrid, one ball in Barcelona... That doesn't work."
Murray, on Tuesday, also called for more consistency in the balls, saying: "If you asked a golfer to change balls every single week, they'd be hitting balls 20 yards too far and hitting shots all over the place."
Nadal said other players were equally unhappy. "A lot of players believe this. That's something that, in my opinion, can change," he said.

In Wood's first tournament in seven weeks, Woods went 13 holes between his only two birdies at the Frys.com Open and had a 2-over 73 that put him in danger of missing consecutive cuts for the first time in his career.
"That's probably one of the worst putting rounds I've ever had," Woods said. "I can't putt the ball any worse than I did today."
Valero Texas Open winner Brendan Steele opened with a 4-under 67 on a cool day at CordeValle with a few bursts of showers. He was joined in the lead by Briny Baird, Garrett Willis and Matt Bettencourt.
Woods fell out of the top 50 in the world ranking this week for the first time in 15 years, and it showed. The best golf in his group came from UCLA sophomore Patrick Cantlay, the No. 1 amateur in the world, who opened with a 2-under 69.
Woods was tied for 86th, although he was still only one shot out of the top 70 and ties that advance to the weekend. It marked the sixth straight round in which he failed to break par, and another occasion of having to scroll far down the leaderboard to find him.
He had not played since missing the cut at the PGA Championship in August, finishing out of the top 100 for the first time in a major. Woods said the time off at least gave him time to practice, to nail down the major work in his swing change with Sean Foley, and to play 36 holes a day at home in Florida.
Being back on the PGA Tour was different, even if it looked the same.
There was nothing special about his game, although whatever he did right was derailed once he got on the greens. Woods missed three putts inside 6 feet, two of them for birdie. Even toward the end of his round, he froze when he saw a 4-foot par putt on the 16th hole take a 360-degree ride around the edge of the cup before falling.
"The rest of the game was not too bad," Woods said. "I hit some bad shots, yes. But also, I hit some really good ones. And very pleased at the shots I was hitting most of the day. But I got nothing out of the round on the greens. And whatever momentum I could have gotten by hitting good shots ... you know, I just missed putts."
He missed a 6-foot birdie attempt at the par-5 ninth, but saved par with a 12-footer -- the longest putt he made all day -- on the next hole. That appeared to give him a lift, for he stuffed his tee shot on the par-3 11th to 4 feet.

After the Australian Open is the Presidents Cup, and then a week off before Woods ends his season at the Chevron World Challenge.
That’s four tournaments over the final three months of the year, hardly the kind of schedule for a player to build any momentum, even a guy who rarely plays more than about 20 times a year even in the best of times.
The best measure of any comeback won’t start until 2012.
One television promotion trumpeted coverage of all four rounds of Woods’ return, forgetting perhaps that unlike his last return at Firestone, the Frys.com Open has a 36-hole cut. Does anyone expect to Woods to be gone by the weekend? He was the last time he played, at the PGA Championship.

Woods has played only 117 holes over three tournaments since the Masters. He missed three months, including two majors, this summer when he wisely decided to stop playing until his left knee and Achilles’ tendon were fully healed. He now says his left leg feels the best it has in years.
Why should anyone expect something different from Woods at a course he has never played than at Firestone, where he had won seven times?
